Our Student Futures team provides a comprehensive, flexible and personalised employability service that engages all of our students and empowers them to make informed choices about their graduate careers.
We recognise that having real life experience in the workplace is a huge benefit to our students when they come to face competitive recruitment processes after graduation. As an applied and inclusive University our links with industry are key to our students’ development. Helping our students to form partnerships, through meaningful work experience in their chosen field, is key to the delivery of our University’s employability objectives.
Our Getting Inside Project is one of our unique student employability programmes. Aimed at students within our School of Applied Sciences, it offers the opportunity for our 3rd and 4th year students (studying on our Life Science, Psychology, Criminology, Social Science and Sport courses) and our master’s students (studying on our Applied Criminology & Forensic Psychology course) to compete for a one week work placement with one of our partner employers in their chosen industry.
While short term work placements are a great way for our students to gain valuable insights to a specific industry and expand their professional networks, they also offer employers a way to strengthen their presence in the graduate employment field and to identify future talent for their businesses.
Placements will run from the Monday to the Thursday of our Inter-Trimester week, week beginning 13th May 2019, with students and employers invited back into the University on the Friday of that week, 17th May 2019, for a networking lunch opportunity. Last year we had over 50 students and around 40 employers take part in a placement week – this year we are hoping to expand this offering even further!
Our students are put through a competitive recruitment process, modelled on those used externally by our employer partners. This includes completing an application form, assessment centre and short competency-based interview. We invite our skilled Careers and Development Team, our partner employers and our relevant academic staff to take part as assessors in this process, giving our students exposure to authentic, industry relevant hiring managers.
After our assessments have been conducted our Recruitment Team will pair up successful students to a suitable employer and will work with our Careers and Development Team to ensure all students go out on placement prepared to make the most of the opportunity. Students and employers are then invited back to the University at the end of the week for a day of reflecting on, and celebrating, their experiences.
